Wednesday Wisdom: How To Achieve Your Big Dream

You’re chasing a big dream. Working toward your dream can be tough, and especially when life gets busy, it’s easy to toss your goal into the backseat and make excuses for yourself.

Or maybe your dream feels like it’s just. too. big. And you don’t even know where to begin. The idea that makes our hearts go pitter-patter, and maybe even scares us, is usually the dream most worthy of our time.

Now, even though general goals (i.e. “Be more productive.”) are great, that’s not what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about the BIG ONE. How can you execute a plan to achieve that specific thing? Let’s talk about it.

THE BIG ONE

You probably already know what it is. It keeps you up at night, and fills your daydreams. Maybe you aren’t sure what it is but you know you need to make a change in order to live your best life.

The first thing you need to do is write it down. Stop judging yourself for whatever your dream is and let it all out. How will achieving this give you the best version of your life? What does it look like? No criticism allowed. Stream-of-consciousness writing only.

Include the details. Take this time for yourself.

SAY “NO”

Many of us say “yes” all the time coming from a good place. We want to make changes, we want to be inspired, and so we say yes to too many things at one time. To achieve something really big, though, you need to learn to say “no”. Saying no takes a lot of practice!

Now, saying no might not mean saying “never”, but it probably does mean “not right now”. No isn’t negative when it’s moving you toward something bigger! Decide what you need to say “no” to. Don’t forget to develop a “yes” list, too! What are the things that will move you closer to that big goal?

COMMIT

Ten minutes a day adds up to over 60 hours in a year. You have the time. If it’s really your dream, you’ll make the time!

Ten minutes might mean waking up 10 minutes earlier every day to dedicate time to your dream. What if you took ten minutes during your lunch break to accomplish one small task each day? Where will that take you in a year? Keep moving forward, every day.

Make a recurring appointment with yourself in your calendar. Keep this appointment! You deserve to be on your own priority list!

What are 4 steps you can take toward your dream? Schedule them out weekly over the course of a month. Maybe you need to do something quick but courageous, like reaching out to a potential mentor. Maybe one of your steps is more time consuming, like a class. Make the time and don’t even think about feeling defeatist. You got this! The best is yet to come!
